A pregnancy test should ideally be taken from the first day of a missed period for the most reliable result. Some sensitive tests can detect pregnancy up to 6 days before the missed period, but testing earlier increases the risk of false negatives because the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) may not be at a detectable level yet. For higher accuracy, it’s recommended to take the test about a week after the missed period. Testing first thing in the morning is best, as the urine is more concentrated with hCG at that time. If the menstrual cycle is irregular or the date of the period is unknown, testing at least 21 days after unprotected sex is advisable.

In summary:

This guidance helps ensure reliable results and timely access to prenatal care if pregnancy is confirmed.
